Guiding principles

People can use enlight to annotate the web, keep their enlights to themselves, in the extension and in Notion (thanks to the Notion sync feature) for free.

Things change as soon as a user starts sharing enlights (thus becoming a light-bearer). Once shared, enlights’ highlights become visible to every enlight user on the corresponding page.

However, the only way they can read the annotations within these enlights is if they’re enlightened i.e. if they’re subscribed.

A user joins the enlightened by unlocking one specific enlight created by one specific light-bearer. Once they do:

  • they can read that enlight but also all the shared enlights from every light-bearer

  • 50% of their subscription goes to the light-bearer (the one whose enlight the initially unlocked) and for as long as they remained subscribed.

Subscription

To join the enlightened, a user can either:

  • pay a monthly membership fee of €5

  • or pay €50 once

Then, 50% of what they pay each month (or once) will go to their chosen light-bearer (the one whose enlight they unlocked).

So, if they pay €5/mo for 10 years, that’s €5 * 120 months i.e. €600. Which means that the creator will receive €300 from them (€2.5 every month).

If they pay €50 one time only, well, the light-bearer will earn €25 that time, and that time only.

Revenue

Read the subscription section above, this one will make a lot more sense after.

As a light-bearer, you can earn 50% of the subscription revenue generated by the users you’ve enlightened.

If three users subscribed by unlocking one of your publicly shared enlights, they’ll pay €5/mo each (here’s how to share an enlight).

Of that €15 monthly total, you’re entitled to 50% i.e. €7.5 every month (read this to learn how to claim your revenue).

Remember one thing though: you need a legal structure to claim your revenue 🚨

What’s up with the remaining 50%?

Well, a big chunk of it goes to the french government (taxes, loooots of taxes)

The rest is for me — king of light-bearers creator and developer of enlight
