Definitions

Highlight

A highlighted blurb on the web.

Annotation

Text you’ve written associated to a blurb you’ve highlighted.

Enlight

Either a highlight, or a highlight and its annotation, created with the enlight chrome extension. So, yeah, “enlight” is both the name of the extension and what you can create with it.

An enlight user who’s shared some of their enlights publicly to be discovered by other enlight users. They’re literally bringing the light to others, with their thoughts, insights, anecdotes, …

Enlightened

The kind of user who’s subscribed to enlight to unlock the public enlights shared by others.

Basics

(De)activate the extension

If you don’t want the control panel to pop out when you select text in web pages, click on the extension’s icon. The bubble and control panel will disappear.

Click again if you want them back.

Fast-enlight shortcut

Hold command (MacOS) or control (Windows) while selecting text. You’ve created the simplest enlight possible: a highlight without an annotation.

Fast-delete shortcut

Hold command (MacOS) or control (Windows) while clicking on an existing enlight to instantly delete it.

Create an enlight

You can either create a simple highlight with the fast-enlight shortcut or:

  1. select text on a page

  2. have the control panel pop out

  3. write your annotation

  4. and finally click on “Create”

Edit an enlight’s highlighted text

  1. Click on an existing enlight to open the control panel

  2. Click on the quote icon (your highlight should disappear)

  3. Now select text on the page again to recreate the highlight

Edit an enlight annotation

  1. Click on an existing enlight to open the control panel

  2. Click on the edit button

  3. Edit your annotation

  4. Finally click on update

NB: you can also completely erase the annotation. A dialog will pop out to ask you to confirm. If you do, your enlight will now be a bare highlight, without its old annotation.

Delete an enlight

You can either use the fast-delete shortcut or:

  1. Click on the enlight to delete

  2. Click on the bin icon

NB: if there’s an annotation in your enlight, a dialog will pop out and ask you to confirm your choice.

Open the extension’s menu

Hover over the bubble and click on the cog icon that appears below.

You’ll see the following buttons:

Automatically save your enlights in Notion

Having your enlights in Notion is key to repurpose them. To set up the sync between enlight and a Notion database:

  1. Start by creating a new datasource by duplicating this Notion template

  2. Connect enlight to the duplicated datasource. If you’ve signed up with Notion, enlight will appear in the list of connections. If you didn’t, now is the time to sign in with Notion.

  3. Then, from the extension’s menu, head over to the Notion Sync Setup dashboard.

  4. Map your enlight fields to the corresponding properties in your datasource:

    1. the URL (where the enlight was created)

    2. the Quote (i.e. the highlighted text in your enlight)

    3. the Annotation (i.e. what you wrote in your enlight, if anything)

  5. If you’d already created enlights prior to setting up the sync, you should see them being inserted in bulk in your Notion datasource.

That’s it. From this point on, if you create, update or delete an enlight in the extension, so will it be in the datasource.

However, the opposite is not true. This is a one-way sync: if you edit enlights in Notion, changes won’t be reflected in the extension.

Other things you should know:

  • If you delete your mapping, your enlights will NOT be deleted from Notion

  • But if you recreate a mapping on the same datasource later on, you might end up with duplicates

  • It does not matter if you add other un-mapped properties in the datasource (it’s already the case in the template i advise you to duplicate). The sync won’t touch them.

(Un)share your enlights

Share an enlight

Click on an enlight you’ve previously created (whether it has an annotation or not) to open the control panel. If you’re logged in, you’ll see a purple “Share” button.

Click on that button to publish your enlight. As soon as you do, you’ll become a light-bearer, and you’ll (potentially) start earning revenue from that enlight.

Users who are not yet subscribed to enlight will see this:

Enlightened users (those who subscribed) however, will be able to read your enlight:

Unshare an enlight

It’s fairly easy: click on a previously shared enlight to open the control panel. The button now says “Unshare”. Click on it to unshare your enlight.

Careful though, if enlightened users have paid to read it, they might be upset. You might want to warn them, or just rewrite your original enlight.

Subscribe to enlight

You cannot read any of the public enlights if you’re not subscribed. To subscribe, you need to pick an enlight you want to unlock. I suggest you pick one from a light-bearer you really like (because they’ll take a cut of your subscription).

Click on the chosen enlight to open the control panel. You’ll see a purple “Subscribe” button. Click on it to… subscribe 🙃

You’ll be redirected to a Stripe checkout page. Once your payment is processed, you’ll be able to read all the publicly shared enlights: the ones from your chosen light-bearer, but all the other light-bearers too.

Manage your enlight subscription

Once subscribed, you can manage your enlight subscription from the menu of the extension. Just click on the “Subscription” button and you’ll be redirected to the same Stripe page than on subscribe. You can cancel your subscription from there.

Claim your light-bearer revenue

If you’ve enlightened other users by sharing your enlights, you’re entitled to 50% of their subscription. Said differently: you’ll earn a share of the subscriptions of users who subscribed to enlight by unlocking one of your public enlights.

To see how much revenue your enlights have generated, and what users you’ve enlightened, go to the revenue section of the extension’s menu.

🚨 YOU NEED A LEGAL STRUCTURE TO CLAIM YOUR REVENUE 🚨

I repeat: i can’t send you money if you don’t have a legal structure that pays taxes.

If you do though, claiming your revenue is fairly simple:

  1. Click on the “Claim Revenue” button of the revenue dashboard

  2. As soon as you do, i’ll be notified, and simultaneously, you’ll receive an email with my company details

  3. Send me an invoice where the amount excluding taxes matches the revenue you just claimed (don’t forget to include your company’s bank details too). For instance, if you’re registered in France and claimed €1000, your invoice must be €1000 excluding taxes i.e. €1200 including taxes (if you collect VAT).

  4. I’ll transfer you the money as soon as i get the invoice.

I suggest you don’t claim your revenues more than once a month (let’s try and limit the paperwork aha).

What you should also know:

  • The claimed revenue is automatically computed based on the amount you’ve claimed in the past and the total revenue you’ve generated over time. If you’ve generated €1000 but already have claimed 200€ and 300€ in the past, then, the new generated claim will be 500€.

  • You can’t generate a new claim if you already have a pending claim.

Report a bug

If something doesn’t work, well, first, be nice lol

I’m on my own trying to make this work. There can be a few bugs, that happens. That being said, it’s very important that you let me know if you spot one.

I can’t fix what i don’t see ;)

But also by clicking on this button in the extension’s control panel:

I’ll do my best to solve it ;)
